American Pet Products Association (APPA)

Industry Association / Thought Leadership & Cultural Positioning
Provided Appa’s Leadership a Transferable Narrative Asset

CHALLENGE:

The American Pet Products Association had spent sixty years building the most respected data authority in a $300 billion industry. They could prove that pets made people healthier, happier, and more emotionally connected. What they could not do was answer the deeper question driving their next era of growth: why do people become pet owners in the first place and how does that number grow beyond its all-time high? APPA needed more than a market strategy. They needed a narrative capable of reframing an entire industry around a cultural mission.

WHAT WE BUILT:

Developed the foundational white paper establishing APPA’s next intellectual chapter: the Human-to-Human Animal Bond (HHAB). Drawing on decades of APPA and HABRI data, cross-disciplinary research in attachment theory, virtue ethics, and positive psychology, and a mixed-methods analysis of the National Pet Owners Survey spanning fifteen years, the white paper advanced a new thesis: that the seven virtues modeled daily by pets — presence, patience, attention, admiration, sacrifice, empathy, and compassion — are the same virtues that heal human relationships and restore social trust. The percentage of pet-owning households was identified as the single unifying metric for both industry growth and cultural renewal. The Story Bank built around this framework gave APPA the language to move every stakeholder, from manufacturers and retailers to policymakers and the public, from a shared data set to a shared mission.

OUTCOME:

Positioned APPA to lead the pet industry’s evolution from a marketplace of products to a movement of purpose, one grounded in sixty years of research and reframed around a thesis no competitor can replicate. The white paper established the intellectual foundation for the Pets Unite Us initiative and gave APPA’s leadership a transferable narrative asset capable of driving industry alignment, media coverage, policy advocacy, and long-term cultural influence.

"We have been collecting the data for decades. Mark gave us the framework to finally understand what it was telling us and the language to make the rest of the world see it."
